Northwestern University – Kellogg School of Management

Full-time MBA program – Interview Questions

Kellogg is one of the rare schools that interview all applicants.

In Singapore, Kellogg offers interviews with an alum. Some of the alumni who interview in Singapore are:

Dress smartly – the rule of thumb is to dress one step more formally than the interviewer. In Singapore, that means – wear a tie.

Understand that Kellogg asks the interviewers to fill up an assessment form about you. Many interviewers do this during the interview. So don’t panic or take it as a negative if the interviewer starts writing notes as you are speaking. It’s normal. If the interviewer doesn’t take notes, that’s ok too.

Think of specific questions you can ask at the end of the interview. Think of at least 3 questions the answers to which are not easily available on Kellogg website etc.

What’s Kellogg looking for:

  • English conversation ability
emphasis on conversation. You SHOULD go through the essays and understand the answers. BUT do NOT memorize the essays to regurgitate them. There needs to be the semblance of spontaneity and a conversation.
Also, try to be to-the-point, structured and fact-based.
  • Interpersonal skills
As I said, turn on the charm.
Show interest in your interviewer as a person.
    Listen to him/her.
If at the end the interviewer asks “anything else”, then take the opportunity to tell him that Kellogg is your school of choice and if admitted you’d definitely attend.
  • Passion
They want to see the passion and excitement. Make sure you are not tired or sleepy before the interview.

Mostly, the interviewer will stick to a list of structured questions. Some commonly asked questions are:

  1. Walk me through your resume.
  2. Why do you want an MBA? Why now?
  3. Why Kellogg?
  4. What will you bring to the Kellogg community and how would you get involved?
  5. Tell me about your undergrad experiences (both Academic and Non-academic)
  6. How/Why did you choose your 1st job?
  7. How did you end up in your current job? (Transition from 1st job to 2nd job)
  8. What is your biggest accomplishment at your current job?
  9. What are your short and long-term goals?
