University of London – London Business School

Full-time MBA program – Interview Questions

In Singapore, LBS conducts off-campus interviews with an alumnus of LBS.

Check out the profile of your interviewer and “prepare” some small-talk to develop a rapport. Also think of specific questions you can ask at the end of the interview.

Dress smartly, and one step more formally than the interviewer – if you are meeting at his/her office, wear a suit but if meeting at a more informal location such as a cafe, drop the suit, but still wear a tie.

LBS interviews are not blind – so expect that your interviewer would have read your application package before speaking with you. So, for the usual questions such as why MBA, why now, why LBS, etc, you want to make sure you stick to the essay responses closely. Also, the interviewer may decide to dig deeper into some aspects of the application and essays.

LBS interviews are very conversational. But don’t let that mislead you into thinking that they are unstructured. LBS sends out a set of questions 50 questions (10 each for leadership, team work, motivation, maturity and communication) to the interviewers who can then pick the questions they want to ask from this pool.

That being said, LBS asks interviewers to evaluate you on the following criteria:

  1. Communication / English Language Skills – Overall, how articulate is this candidate?
  2. Team Skills – Does the candidate contribute to his team? understand his strengths/weaknesses? manage conflict well? understand how teams work well together?
  3. Leadership Skills – Does the candidate understand his/her leadership style? know his development goals?
  4. Drive & Energy – Does the candidate have passion?
  5. Intellectual Skills – Does the candidate analyze business situations well? show strategic perspective? think on this own?
  6. International Perspective – Does the candidate have exposure to cultural diversity? have interest in people from diverse backgrounds?
  7. Expectations & Interest in LBS MBA – Does the candidate convince you of strong interest in the LBS MBA?
  8. Contribution and Fit at LBS – Did the candidate ask good/relevant questions? Would the candidate contribute to the LBS MBA?
  9. Post MBA Career Objectives – Realistic goals, given background and LBS MBA?

The interview structure is generally split between the interview and a presentation.

  • 25 mts – Interview (interviewer asks questions)
  • 10 mts – Interviewer presents a topic
  • 5 mts – Candidate prepares a 3 minute presentation on the topic
  • 5-10 mts – Candidate presents
